11. The PACIFIC is made with surgical stainless steel, designated 420 stainless in the industry,
Since 420 surgical stainless steel can rust if abused (see information below) the next feature is a very unusual feature demonstrating the special designing that went into this special knife.
12. There are no engraved words on the blades. Other high quality knives made of 420 surgical
stainless steel have engravings on the blade telling what kind of steel it is and who made it. While these words may have been etched by the manufacturer with pride, they ignore the fact that the carbon and chromium content of the special stainless steel requires that the blades must be rinsed free of salt water after use. You can't conveniently rinse out the engravings on a blade. If you examine the engravings on the blade of any high quality knife that has been used in salt water you will probably find that the engravings are beginning to rust. That won't happen on the PACIFIC
For those of you who are interestsed in the high grade stainless steel used in the PACIFIC we include the following information.
Stainless steel comes in various grades to suit various purposes. Most people think that stainless steel cannot stain or corrode. That is not true. Some stainless steel will rust if not cared for.
The truly rust proof stainless steel that is commonly used in knives made for use in a marine environment, such as scuba diving, can be abused without fear of rust. You can come out of the water and just toss them in your gear bag until you use it next time. The down side of having a knife made of truly rust proof stainless steel is that it will not hold a sharp edge. You can easily test to see if a knife is made of that grade of stainless steel with a magnet. A magnet will not stick to a knife made of that grade of steel.
Knives used by professionals are chosen for their utilitarian design and their ability to hold a razor edge. You can't afford a dull edge when your life may depend on your quickly cutting a line to free yourself.
Carbon and chromium are added to the steel to make it hard. Surgical instrments will rust. But they are required to hold a razor edge.
Therefore, if you want a knife that you do not have to clean, this is not the cutting tool for you. If you don't rinse this in fresh water after you use it in salt water, it will begin to rust.
This alloy is a chromium steel which is used for dental and surgical instruments, high quality cutlery, pump shafts, plastic molds and dies, steel balls, and various high end hand tools.
Corrosion Resistance:
420 is resistant to the atmosphere, fresh water, dilute acids and alkalis and fruit and vegetable juices. The corrosion resistance is sufficient to resist attack by food and normal washing methods, but prolonged contact with unwashed food residues can result in pitting.
Hardenable, straight-chromium stainless steel combines superior wear resistance with excellent corrosion resistance.
420 stainless steel is capable of being hardened up to Rockwell Hardness 50HRC, the highest hardness of the 12 per cent chromium grades. Its best corrosion resistance is achieved when the metal is hardened and surface ground or polished.
This super knife comes with either a black or yellow handle.
